Out There

About

I’m Pete Schneidler, and I live with my wife and daughter in the tundra village of Kasigluk. Tammy and I moved here at the end of June, 2003. The tundra villages lie within the Yukon-Kuskokwim National Wildlife Refuge, about 25 miles west of the hub village of Bethel in Western Alaska. If you’re looking at a map, we’re below the Yukon and above the Kuskokwim, and to the right of Baird Inlet. Kasigluk is made up of about 550-600 people, all of whom are Yup’ik Eskimo except for some Kass’aqs (non-natives) employed by LKSD in the two schools here. For more on our village, see this page on our old site (that is frozen and time and can’t be updated): http://schneidlers.com/peter/news/Kasigluk.htm

Since January of 2004, I’ve been working on a distance-delivered master’s degree in SLAP (Speech-Language and Auditory Pathology) from East Carolina University in collaboration with the University of Alaska Anchorage. I also help out at Akiuk Memorial School, where my wife teaches middle school. I coach sports and help out when I can. I used to do this a lot more, but lately my days are filled by taking care of our beautiful daughter Claire. I watch her all day, getting “stuff” done when she is at the babysitter for 1.5 hours (M-F) and when she naps for about the same amount of time.

This has all changed now, as I completed my MS degree on 8/1/08. I go to work for our school district (www.LKSD.org) as an SLP (speech-language pathologist) on 8/25. I’ll be travelling between various villages in the area by plane, snowgo, and boat (weather permitting). Tammy and I hope to both work on a part-time basis and somehow give Claire what she needs while also keeping our jobs and sanity!

I stumbled onto your blog with a wordpress search for rural Alaska. I’m trying to do what I can from Miami to get the word out about the situation in the Yukon Delta. Is your village affected?

If you have a few minutes, could you please visit my blog and see if you have anything to add to my “how to help” page? Any comments about how this is affecting you or people to know would be appreciated. If you would like to contribute, that would be great. I don’t know enough about the situation to keep a conversation going — I just want to get the word out so people won’t go hungry.

    Thanks,
    Jane
